Where we’re going we don’t need roads…
Working our way out to the main highway
We pack up and leave the campsite, with plans from the owners to take the new ring road around the the SA boarder, a nice easy drive. It had rained so the drive out was a bit wet and muddy but overall alright, we hit the tarmac and air back up. Asareh takes over driving and we point south. I find out quickly that there is a road that crosses straight across the country, right to the border, what a win right? We turn down it, sand, but hard packed. Every farm we pass the road gets thinner and thinner, finally we end up tangled in bushes, after pushing through we follow faint tracks through a field and pop out onto a road. Success we have saved 5 minutes and it will be wasted airing back up, but its all about the adventure.
ARB compressor makes short work of this task This is alright Ohhh… its going away
We stop at a town near the border and park up for lunch, we stroll the local market and the smell of chicken cooking on a brake drums catches our noses. We have found our lunch spot and we grab a seat, the lady is super friendly and the chicken was some of the best I have had to date. TO DATE, no jokes. We spice it up a bit with some hot sauce Asareh grabbed from a local, its in a gin bottle so its gotta be good, I test it, not bad but pretty mild.
Seriously, best chicken we have had to date Asareh and the chef
A short time later we arrive at the border post. The Moz side goes well after we get rid of the runners, a quick couple stamps and we are gone. Pulling into the SA side Asareh yells she just seen a crab cross the road… okay crazy (I may or may not have found one in DRC) we get a 6 month TIP and stamps, easy pease, and head for a night in the Kruger park. I highly suggest not stopping here for just 1 night. The fees are outrageous.
The road opened back up as we got closer to town And were ready to cross
Anyways, hot showers and monkeys. And remember that hot sauce, I used all the mild oil off the top on my previous meal, so this round when I coated our little dinner I was redder than a baboons butt. Great stuff 10/10. To many lights on in the park so you can’t get a good sleep.
Night time setup with the fridge slide in use
The next day we hammered back to Joburg and left the wagon till our return. we assumed we would do it in 3 week blocks.. not quite. our next round lasted us a stunning 70 days on the road.
