Today is the day, we wake up once the sun has allowed the temperature to climb a bit. No point in freezing. With a small fire started back up Asareh starts breakfast, omelet . I go about the important business of heating up water, this is where metal jugs are great, I place one next to the fire and on top of warm coals under sand and begin the process of heating a kettle and cycling water, just after breakfast we have hot water. This shower was amazing, after a few days of dust and sweat it was a welcome treat.

Quick breakfast, and the water being heated next to the fire

Total water used: 12L

Asareh’s mood: Cloud nine

Xade gate Happy couple

We have been enjoying our slow pack ups and roll out of camp just after 11am, a family just rolls in behind us to take the camp site. Bit of an early stop I thought but they had kids and there is a water hole just down the road. Who knows.

Today begins with me stressing slightly about fuel still as the deep sand continues, but only for another 20kms then we start entering harder ground and eventually the pans, making our run super smooth and fuel use much less. I decide to pump the tyres up a bit and ask Asareh to go on lion watch but animals during the drive are rare due to the bush but once we reach Pipers pan it opens up and its like a scene from the lion king, animals everywhere. We even have mongooses back at camp.

Happy camper?

We sit and enjoy the wildlife and even do a lap around one of the pans, eventually returning back to our campsite for a drink and relax. As the sunsets we head back to the pan, no lions, but we did see some handbags fighting and giraffes in the distance.

Excuse me! do you know the way to the pub?

Back at camp the G&T starts flowing and we make spaghetti and salad, we even got to bust out our slim fit cheese grater for toppings. Eating like royalty in the bush. We end the night listening to the lions roar in the distance. But never see one.
